Jamie has been working in the mental health field since 2017. He grew up in Methuen, Massachusetts, and later moved to New Hampshire in his early 20s. When he learned he was going to be a father, Jamie decided he wanted to set an example for his children by pursuing an education. It took him 10 years, off and on, to find his calling in psychology. Once he realized his passion, Jamie changed his major at Mount Washington College and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He then continued his education at Southern New Hampshire University, where he obtained a master’s degree in psychology. Currently, he is pursuing a degree in Mental Health counseling at his alma mater, with the goal of becoming independently licensed.

After spending several years in sales, Jamie had a change of heart when he lost someone close to him to an overdose. He wanted to make a difference in people’s lives by helping them find peace and happiness without turning to substances. Jamie has since found great fulfillment in his work and is grateful for the wonderful people he has met and worked with along the way.

Jamie lives with his dog, Huey, and has two grown sons. He enjoys snowboarding, hiking, and other physical activities with his family. Jamie is also learning to play the guitar and speak Spanish, two things that have been on his bucket list. He firmly believes in the potential for personal growth and strives to seize every opportunity to better himself and others.

What Our Alumni Are Saying

quote

Avenues has shown me patience, kindness, and love; when it seemed like the world gave up on me, Avenues didn’t. It’s given me an outlook on my own life that I don’t have to give up on myself and Avenues has helped me to show me how to live life on life’s terms and to walk through my fears and insecurities. When it was hard to love myself the staff here has loved me. When I first came into treatment I was only committed to two weeks but because of the hope Avenues has shown me and the growth I have seen here I have now been clean and sober almost six months. Between the art & music therapy, meditation groups, one-on-one counseling sessions, family therapy, 4th step group, the recovery community that I’m a part of today and made true, lifelong friends in, the staff here at Avenues made me feel like I wasn’t alone and that there were many people in the world together fighting this disease. I learned here that I don’t have to hold my head in shame, becoming a recovering heroin addict, but that I can be proud of being in recovery today and help others. Now I am able to help the guys that first come in, explaining how the program is laid out for a reason for safety, support, and love, and showing us how to live life when we don’t know how to through small tasks like doing your chore, having accountability, and being called out when you fall short. When everybody in the world had given up on me, Avenues Recovery didn’t, and for that I’m forever grateful.

Avenues is the one thing I was missing during two previous attempts to get sober. They provided me a safe structured environment where I could bond with other men in recovery and dig deep into the underlying causes and conditions preventing me from staying sober. My only other focus at first was to establish a healthy recovery routine and little by little, slowly feather life and all of life’s chaos into that routine. The staff is absolutely top notch and the Clinical Director in particular is a huge part of what makes this program work so well. I’m forever grateful to all of them.

One of the most wonderful things that has happened to me over a period of 9 to 14 years is making the decision to come to Avenues. I personally have been through a lot with substance abuse and I couldn’t find any way out. I tried to quit by myself and I never had any success. Now I am almost two months sober and am excited to get my two month chip! The program works magnificently; it takes a lot of courage, energy, and determination, but in the end it is totally worth it. I feel better today, that there is hope and that I don’t need to take drugs to feel okay. I can smile authentically. The community at Avenues is one of the most beautiful things; we have house-wide weekly dinners and there is a true sense of fellowship among us all. The laughter and the weekend activities are amazing. The friendships that I have made at Avenues have been some of the most sincere I have ever had, unlike the ones I made in the past through drugs and alcohol. I feel like that part of my life has gone by. Everything is possible, it just takes dedication and perseverance, and not giving up in the face of adversity. I am grateful for the wonderful staff members, for the community, for the house, for the skills I’ve learned at Avenues and the people that actually show kindness and care about the client’s well being.
